🔮 Why Are Tarot Card Backs Important?

The patterns on the back of tarot cards may look like decoration, but they carry much deeper meaning. Each design is chosen to connect your subconscious with the collective unconscious 🌿

For example, decks with flowers, stars, or circles on the back use sacred geometry, which helps your mind attune often unconsciously to the universal symbolic language. Simply gazing at these patterns can open you to deeper energy when working with the cards. Tarot scholar Rachel Pollack also noted that the sacred geometry on card backs acts as a tool to awaken intuition, and that “the backs form a symbolic link to the collective unconscious.” 📌

Another key point is symmetry. If the back design were asymmetrical, you could see before turning the card whether it was upright or reversed, which would bias your reading. A symmetrical back keeps your intuition free, allowing the card’s orientation to remain a surprise.

As you shuffle, the repeating patterns on the backs move before your eyes. This repetition creates a subtle trance effect, activating your subconscious and making it easier to hear the message of the cards. In a way, the face of the card tells the story of life, while the back prepares you to receive that story intuitively. That’s why the back can be seen as the “hidden key” of the tarot even if it looks unimportant at first glance.

✨ Tip for beginners: If you’re just starting with tarot, avoid decks with plain or overly simple backs. Instead, choose a deck with symmetrical and symbolic designs. This way you can’t predict whether a card is upright or reversed, and the patterns will help open your intuition more quickly. Some modern decks even feature spirals or labyrinth motifs, which can work more deeply with your subconscious 🙂
